COCOCHOCO professional journal

I’ve performed a Cocochoco treatment – what should I tell my clients, and how can I help them maintain their hairstyle?

So, you’ve just done, or are planning to do, a stunning Cocochoco treatment. You want to make sure your clients know exactly what to do, what to expect, and how to get the best and longest lasting results! That’s exactly what we’re going to go through in this Blog Post.

General advice

Regardless of the treatment you’ve chosen and the hair you’ve treated, there are a few key pieces of advice that we want to offer you.

  • Our treatments are semi-permanent. Keratin and Onyx treatments often result in straightened-hair effects. However, our treatments are not chemical straightening treatments (i.e. we are not breaking and reforming bonds in the hair to achieve straightness), therefore we cannot absolutely guarantee that the effects will be poker-straight. If you’ve read some of our other blog posts about the differences between treatments read the related article, assessing hair suitability read the related article, or reasons that your client might not be getting best results read the related article, you’ll know what effects you can achieve, and for how long. Unfortunately, our treatments are not magic, so clients need to be fully informed about what they can expect, and what is beyond the capabilities of the treatments. Under-promise and Over-deliver!
  • How should you be advertising the treatments to your clients? Great question! Very briefly, Keratin is a smoothing treatment that can offer straightened-hair effects, with great shine and manageability. Hair Botox is a smoothing treatment that provides a nourishing and restorative treatment, while giving UV protection and great shine and manageability. Onyx is a new-generation treatment with longer lasting effects, that provides nourishment and strength, along with smoothened and straightened hair effects.
  • All of our treatments are heat-activated. This means that the client needs to be fully blowdrying their hair after a wash to see best effects. It’s important to mention this, because many clients may be disappointed by the results if they let their hair air-dry.
  • You as the stylist need to advocate for a full maintenance routine, including Cocochoco’s own brand of aftercare products. You don’t have to stock the aftercare – you just need to recommend it. If a client is not using the Cocochoco brand of aftercare, then you cannot stand over the long-term results they are achieving. For more information on this, check out our Blog Post about this exact topic read the related article.

Immediate aftercare

Keratin/Hair Botox: For the first 72 hours following the Keratin treatment, or 24 hours after Hair Botox, the client needs to keep the hair down, straight and dry. Keratin needs 3 full days to settle into its new laminated shape and Hair Botox, a milder treatment, needs 24 hours. Any kinks, bends, curls, or frizz that develops during this 73/24 hour time needs to be immediately blowdried and straightened out, to ensure that the shape that settles in the hair is one of straightness and smoothness. Even tucking the hair behind the ears should be avoided, as this bend can last in the hair! Straighteners should be set to a medium heat for maintenance – appx 160 degrees, to ensure the client doesn’t damage or re-melt the lamination on the hair. If they use temperatures above 180, it is possible that the lamination can degrade, ruining full effects. For showers, the client can gently clip the hair out of the way, ensuring it doesn’t get wet, and then blowdry and straighten the hair once finished. If the client goes to the gym/sweats during this initial maintenance time, again they need to blowdry and straighten. While sleeping, the client may develop ‘bedhead’ – in this case, again once they get up the client needs to blowdry and straighten, to ensure the frizz does not settle in the hair.

Onyx: The Onyx treatment is rinsed in the salon before the client leaves. For best results, only conditioner is used in the rinse, to ensure the hair structure has been stabilized. For best results, we recommend that the client washes their hair for the first time with shampoo after 24 hours, as there may be a feeling of greasiness from product residue. Between the time of leaving the salon and doing the first wash with shampoo, the client is free to clip, tie, and bend the hair, or style as desired.

Long-term aftercare / maintenance

All treatments should be maintained exclusively using Cocochoco aftercare. We explain why in our aftercare Blog Post read the related article. You’ll find information on the best choice of aftercare for your client’s hair type in a separate Blog Post read the related article.

For clients who enjoy swimming, we advise that they invest in a silicone swimcap, as the salt water from the sea, or chemicals from the pool, can have adverse effects on the longevity of the treatment.

Styling should be done on medium heat, to ensure the lamination of the hair is not damaged. The client should also use our Thermal Protection spray to protect the hair from the heat of styling tools.

For best results, the client should repeat the treatment as needed; for Keratin and Hair Botox, this will be an average of every 3-4 months. With Onyx, clients tend to return every 6-8 months so that we can refresh the ends, and strongly treat the root area.
