Many clients with curls also struggle with frizz. In fact, some clients who think they have frizzy hair actually have curly hair, but they are not using the right products and processes to bring the curl out!
In this Blog Post we’re going to discuss the pros and cons of treating curly clients, and when you should think about stepping away, or offering alternative treatments.
Curls come in many different forms, from fine and delicate to thick and unruly. Some clients want to keep their curls but tame the frizz, others prefer to have their hair fully straightened. So, what should you do?
If a curly client wants to fully straighten their hair, you need to manage their expectations. Our treatments are not magic, and cannot perform miracles. If a client with 4C hair wants poker straight results, then Cocochoco might not be the right service for them. This is because our treatments are semi-permanent, with results depending entirely on the hair type, condition and strength. The lamination that you are creating with a Keratin or Hair Botox treatment will not be strong enough to keep exceptionally strong or unruly curls totally flat for any extended period of time. Onyx may give you longer lasting straightening effects, but only if you are able to use full temperature and pass parameters. If the client still wants to go ahead with a Cocochoco service, they can expect to experience a reduction in frizz and more manageability.
On the other hand, if a client with delicate curls wants to reduce their frizz, we might experience the opposite effects – fine and delicate curls may not be strong enough to withstand the lamination of Keratin or Hair Botox, so the client in this case might experience quite straight hair effects (which may not be what they want!). So, again, you will need to manage expectations, and perhaps perform a strand test so that the client can see what kind of results they can expect.
More often than not, Hair Botox is the best choice for curly clients, because it is a smoothing treatment with the least capability of providing straightening results (but, you are still creating a lamination with a straightener on a high heat, so straightening results can occur!). Hair Botox typically results in smooth, shiny, nourished hair results, while allowing some movement and body to return to the hair after a couple of washes.
If a client is particularly fussy or concerned about their curl pattern, then we would not advise going ahead with a Cocochoco treatment, as the effects may be stronger than they want. Instead, you could suggest the Keratin Repair hair mask, which will help repair any damage throughout the hair strand, helping to reduce frizz caused by damage.
