How to safely treat permed or chemically altered hair

The most important thing before performing any treatment on a client is to understand their hair history. Any previous treatments or services that the client has had on their hair will affect the hair condition and strength, both of which need to be considered before a new treatment is performed.

Chemical straightening treatments, or chemical curling treatments (perms) can greatly affect the condition and strength of the hair. Typically these chemical treatments work on the internal structure of the hair, breaking bonds and reshaping them, before setting (or neutralizing) the hair into its new shape. Breaking bonds can be incredibly difficult to recover from, and often clients will need to allow the hair to grow out and perform a cut to fully recover from these treatments. A hallmark of these treatments is a dividing line between hair conditions – the bottom sections of the hair might appear either fully straightened, or fully curled, while the top section around the roots appears more natural – waves, frizz, kinks or bends. If you notice this, then this is a sure sign that you need to do some more investigating before performing a new Cocochoco treatment on a client.

To understand exactly what kind of tests you should be doing to understand the hair health of the client, we advise you to check out our Blog Post here.

If the client’s hair passes these tests, then our advice is to ensure at least 5-6 weeks has passed since their last smoothing/perming treatment before proceeding with a new service. This advice also stands for repeating a Cocochoco service if needed, or swapping between smoothing treatment brands. All smoothing services are intensive services, typically requiring a lot of heat and energy, so the hair will need time to recover between treatments.
